An exciting, nerve-wracking, hectic, amazing day! The day you start your StFX journey will be one of the busiest of the year. You need to check in, get your ID, move into residence or your new house, attend house meetings, and start Orientation Week events. All on top of consoling your parents, saying goodbye, and meeting hundreds of new people. It can all be a little overwhelming. Luckily, there are TONS of people on campus that day to help make your transition as smooth as possible. And luckily we have the inside scoop on move in day to help you out ahead of time.
O-Crew. They’re in bright pink shirts and never stop cheering. Easy to spot and trained to welcome you to campus, bring you to events, and be your friend. If you’re ever unsure where you’re supposed to be, ask one of them and they’ll point you in the right direction.
Residence Life. They’re in blue shirts that say STAFF on the back. They live in residence with you, have lived in residence before, and can give you the lowdown on tips, tricks, and resources to help you with your new home. They also know the O-week schedule and can help you out if you need to find your house.
Staff/faculty. Dozens of other people who work at the university will also be around. They’ll likely be in StFX professional clothing (though I understand if this doesn’t narrow it down much. They’re all eager to help you out and give you advice. I encourage you to take them up on it.
7:30am– The Keating Centre opens for students. This is where you will get your Academic Day schedule, pick up your ID, sort out finances with the Business Office, shake hands with Dr. MacDonald, pick up your frosh kit, and get introduced to some resources on campus. You’ll also be provided some food- I encourage you to take it even if you’re not very hungry. It will be a long day!
Tip: The earlier you arrive, the less of a line there will be. This can literally save you hours. There are lots of students to move through, but just think of it as an opportunity to meet some new friends.
7:30am-3pm– All day long we have an “AskMe” booth running. If you have questions, they have answers. Feel free to stop by at any point if you need clarification, directions, or help in any way.
9am– Residences open for you to move in. House Presidents, Vice Presidents, and ResLife Staff will be there to welcome you home and give you your house shirt.
10am, 11am, 12pm, 3:15pm– Parent Orientation Sessions are offered by the Head of Student Services to introduce several departments on campus, such as financial aid, health & counselling, dining services, and more. Feel free to pick whichever session works best for you that day! Tours of campus are offered immediately after each session.
2pm– The President’s Welcome. Students can attend with their parents, or with their house. You’re encouraged to wear your house shirt because it’s the first event that everyone attends.
3pm– Time to say goodbye to your parents for the night. Your schedule will be pretty full from here on out, so this is the best opportunity to get in your hugs and tears before the excitement of O-Week really begins.
3:30pm– House meetings! At this point you can go back to your residence for your first house meeting. You’ll learn some basic house rules and get a proper introduction of everyone who works in your building. It’s a great opportunity to meet some new friends right away. You’ll also learn your house cheers for the cheer-off! If you live Off-Campus, you’ll be given a location to meet on-campus to get to know other OC students and meet your leaders.
4:30pm-5:45pm– Cheer Off and X Photo. These are X’s traditional O-Week openers. You get the chance to come together as a house and express pride in your new home. The house with the most positive house spirit will get the most points from O-Crew (which goes toward winning the Frosh Cup).
6pm– Supper time! All new students will head to Bishops Lawn for some BBQ before the evening’s festivities!
7:30pm-8:30pm– House meeting number 2. This is your opportunity to get to know your floor and house a little better. You’ll do some more introductions (so get your fun facts ready) and learn some rules about living in residence. Pay attention, because they apply all-year round.
9pm-12am– Tent Party! The first night event of O-Week is guaranteed to be fun! With a tent full of music that’s a little more upbeat and dance-worthy and a space for chiller, local music, all tastes are accommodated. Whether you’re ready for a party or just want to hang out and relax, you can still come out and participate in the action.
If you have any questions about Welcome Day or Week, feel free to reach out on the Students’ Union App, the This is 2020 Facebook Page, or comment on this blog.
We can’t wait to meet you all in 3 short days!
