GUESS WHAT?! 57 days until welcome day!!!
I’m sure you have all heard about the wonderful things that is StFX, but how about the town that surrounds it? You may have never even heard of Antigonish until after applying to go to school here. If this is the case, keep reading this post and you will get the low down on what to do in your future town.
Despite its nickname, Anti-go-nowhere, this town is booming with small businesses and a lively arts culture. You just need to know where to look. So to help, here’s a list of what to do here in case you get “cabin fever” with the town that has only two streets.
Townhouse: founded in 2012, this “neighbourhood pub” is a great place to hangout, listen to Jazz music, and enjoy craft brews and local food produced in the Maritimes. It is a really neat atmosphere and really worth checking out!
Tall & Small Café: the small café has amazing food (soups, sandwiches, baked goods, fairly traded coffee, teas. etc) and a great place to study, if you can find a spot! A turkey pesto from here should definitely be on your bucket list before you graduate, but fair warning, once you try it, you are gonna have a hard time not coming back for another!
Waffle Bus: this creative spot takes waffles to the next level! Whether you like a sweet waffle with bananas and Nutella, or a savory breakfast sandwich waffle (called the beast), this is the place for you! They also have great coffee and smoothies to go along with your waffle!
Pachamama: chocolate, tea bar, lunch specials, ice cream… Their awesome food is made completely vegan with organic fair trade products and fresh, local ingredients. Perfect for those with dietary restrictions.. You can’t even tell it’s vegan!!
Snow Queen: this breakfast spot has not only great food but it is at a reasonable price for those of us on a student budget!
Brownstone Café: this is a great spot, with great food, and a great patio in the summer months! If you like a little adventure when it comes to food, try their Chicken Mango wrap, you won’t regret it!
Piper’s Pub: although it is known for the place to go out on a Saturday night, they have some great food, and not too expensive either! From flatbreads to nachos, they have the classic pub food to fix your cravings.
There are many great sights on the outskirts of Antigonish including many beaches and a really cool lighthouse. Find a friend with a car, or call a cab because it will be worth your wild to venture to these spots.
- Crystal Cliffs (StFX owns this beach)
- Mahoney’s Beach (the closest beach to X, you can see seals in the winter)
- Cribbons Beach (my personal favourite)
- Pomquet Beach
- Arisaig Provincial Park
- Cape George Lighthouse
Opened on Saturdays from 8:30am-1:00pm, filled with delicious local foods and crafts
There are many beautiful trails outside of Antigonish that would be great for de-stressing after a long week of classes. Take an afternoon and enjoy all that nature has to offer.
- The Landing
- Fairmont Hiking Trail
- Keppoch Mountain
- Cape George Trail
Based out of the Bauer Theatre on campus, they come out with several plays and skits throughout the year. I strongly advised getting involved either through participating or a member of the audience!!
Antigonish Heritage Museum
If you want to learn more about your new home, check it out and while you are there, check out the Landing!
If nothing on this list jumps out at you, DO NOT panic- there’s a lot more that this town has to offer and you will all see that for yourselves soon!! Also, there are tons of events and societies around campus that no doubt you will find something you are interested in!
Also, in case you come up to visit in the summer, check out the calendar of events in the summer guidebook. There’s everything from yoga to nights to go to the Townhouse! See for yourself!
Although in your first year you may not feel the need to leave campus, I strongly recommend it. There are a lot of hidden treasures mentioned above that are definitely worth going out of your comfort zone to see. I hope you guys are as excited as we are for welcome day, see you all soon!
